[Award] “House in Shinokaze” has won the Grand Prize at the 13th Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) Tokai Residential Architecture Award 2026!
“House in Shinokaze” has won the Grand Prize at the Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) Tokai Residential Architecture Award 2026!
The jury members—Mao Harada, Sou Fujimoto, and Taro Igarashi—along with the architects involved in the project’s management, conducted an on-site review, followed by a public second-round judging session later that same day.
Faced with six projects showcasing the diverse richness of contemporary housing, Jury Chair Harada expressed, right from the start of the judging, her reservations about establishing fixed evaluation criteria to determine the winners.
On the other hand, she noted that a majority vote could be swayed by individual preferences, so a delicate, exploratory discussion ensued on whether it was possible to determine the awards while avoiding both pitfalls—making for a truly thrilling and enjoyable session.
Mr. Fujimoto commented on the importance of architectural challenges where designers strive to break out of their own shells,
while also emphasizing the ethical principle that architects must absolutely avoid causing tragedy for the recipients through their challenges demonstrating the spirit of a true trailblazer.
Drawing on insights from his experience as a judge for the Tohoku Housing Grand Prix, Mr. Igarashi emphasized the value of the critical perspective embedded in architecture, and—in a statement characteristic of a historian—expressed his desire to select works that would allow for lengthy written critiques.
As the culmination of an excellent judging process, it was a great honor that the jury ultimately selected “House in Shinokaze” by unanimous decision.
I was also very pleased by the evaluation that House in Shinokaze carries the weight of what a residence is.” I believe this is thanks to the client family, who have lived in the house with such freedom and ease, far surpassing our original design intentions. I offer my heartfelt gratitude.
To the jury members—Mr. Harada, Mr. Fujimoto, and Mr. Igarashi—I learned a great deal from you.
To everyone involved in organizing the event, thank you for providing me with such a valuable experience.
Thank you very much. I will continue to strive toward the goal of “architecture.”
